well it's a great router but first off read the specs it only takes sata hard drives I put a sata 2 500 gb and a 640 gb sata 2 in it and it wouldn't format either of these drives I kept getting format errors second this thing can t take a 1 tb or higher drive it only takes 2.5

Needless to say, having an HDD enables the DIR-685 to become much more than a simple router...With a drive, you instantly pick up an iTunes server, a media streamer and a P2P file manager -- not bad...Overall, D-Link did an excellent job shoving four devices into one without sacrificing quality in any one area in particular...So, after all of this, is the DIR-685 really worth the coinage...

Ralink chips would be the same in DIR-685 except for Wireless dual band but then it's going to be single band so would work like what I have 2.4GHz...I think the DIR-655 will be a dead router if the DIR-685 becomes available...Instead of running WHS or W3K in your house you can do that with DIR-685...

Unfortunately, some poor design decisions result in a product that we definitely recommend you take a pass on...DIR-685 General Router Information displayed on the built-in LCD display...Although all cabled connectivity was working pretty good, the wireless...

And if you thought the LCD display on Belkin’s N1 Vision was cool, D-Link’s widgety-looking 3.2" LCD on the DIR-685 ($209.99) is downright futuristic...Fortunately, there’s a lot more to the DIR-685 than being a quarter-sized photo frame...You could plant a top-end drive in that bad boy and have yourself 640GB or more of instant network-attached storage accessible by up to 64 user accounts or general FTP...We like that the DIR-685 can email alert and firmware patch messages to the admin...

LCD, room for a hard drive, and a whole bunch more...D-Link first introduced the DIR-685 Xtreme N (don’t worry, it does B and G as well) Storage Router back in January at CES...So let’s just say I was a bit skeptical, at first, as to whether all of the features that the DIR-685 offers are actually useful, or just window dressing...Although small, the LCD is actually quite nice, with adjustable brightness, good color reproduction, and enough resolution to accomplish its purpose...I guess I’m of two minds about having a fancy router… More features is good, but that implies more complicatedness, and there’s also more that can get screwed up...

I told my work mate the Dlink story when he was buying a router but he still went and got a Dlink DIR-635 agains my advice because "the reviews were good...One unit burned itself up so bad that there was black soot inside from the chips that had the tops burned off...OMG I want that so bad I am going to pee my pants...

So maybe they are right, maybe it the DIR-685 is overkill...When companies like D-Link design a product, their designers try to design a product that will be of use to its user now and in the future and I think the D-Link DIR-685 is indeed the type of router that was designed with the future in mind...Overall the D-Link DIR-685 is an amazing product, great for streaming HD content wirelessly around your home, easy to set up NAS device (HDD not included ?) and being able to view different channels via Frame Channel is pretty cool as well...

Evidently, D-Link is toying with the convergence concept with the neatly packaged Xtreme N DIR-685...It seems the DIR-685 "out-of-the-box" device still needs a fair amount of configuration and tech knowledge to get all the features working, too much for the average user...D-Link used to make reallly good and simple ADSL routers, why can't they go the extra mile and make the whole thing just work out-of-the-box, it's not like other NAS devices haven't already...
