Xerox may be known to designers for high-spec laser printers, but the Phaser 7400 is a low-cost A3+ unit going up against the likes of HPâs Color LaserJet 5550 and Okiâs C9600...The 7400 performs very well, but many studios will prefer to look to Xeroxâs higher-end 7750 for peace of mind when it comes to proofs...The 7400 is the fastest colour laser weâve seen so far...In our real world tests, pitching the 7400 against the Phaser 7700, the low-cost unit showed its stripes...Using Digit 96's Showcase section as a high-quality, high-coverage benchmark, the 7400 output the ten-page feature in one minute and 33 seconds â compared to the one minute and 41 seconds taken by the 7700...The 7400 is available with the usual set of options that add duplex and trays that can hold up to 3,000 sheets...

Of course, there are A4 colour laser printers available for less than £300 now with pretty decent performance, but in a professional environment, with a printer being shared by a whole office, it's worth getting a solid workhorse like the Phaser 7400...The Phaser 7400 is actually an LED printer, although that will matter little to anybody...The 7400 seems to have cured that problem, which in fairness was only ever slight...The output is now every bit as good as an average laser printer...I have been assuming that users of the 7400 are demanding designers, when in fact colour printers are common in all offices now and are no longer the preserve of creatives...
